I'm a foreign resident, not a local citizen. Can I still open a Luno account?

You most certainly can! If you’re a foreign resident in one of our supported countries, you can open a Luno account and verify your identity there.

How to sign up for a Luno account

  1. Sign up with Luno on the web, or on our mobile apps with your email address

  3. Enter and confirm your mobile number

  4. You’ll be guided through steps on how to verify your identity

There are different account levels, with deposit and withdrawal limits that apply to each level.

To verify your identity, and to upgrade your account to a new level, you may be asked to provide some or all of the following:

  • A colour photo of your valid passport

  • A self-portrait photo (a clear, colour selfie) no older than 24 hours

  • Proof of residential address in the country you’re signing up in

  • Bank statement/letter with proof of address in the country you’re signing up in

  • Proof of residency permission from the country that you’re signing up in

Proof of identity

We require two documents to verify your identity:

  • A colour photo of your valid passport

  • A self-portrait photo (a clear, colour selfie) no older than 24 hours

Proof of residency

Valid government-issued residence permit/visa, which should be one of the following types:

  • Business 

  • Permanent 

  • Refugee 

  • Spousal 

  • Study 

  • Work

Proof of bank account with residential address*

  • Bank letter 

  • Bank statement

* This should be a recent bank statement or a stamped letter from your local bank (not older than three months), that clearly indicates:

  1. Your full name

  2. Your bank account number

  3. Your residential address. If your bank statement does not show your residential address, you also need to submit a separate proof of residential address document

Note

We can only verify information when the name and passport number that you submitted to us is the same as the name and passport number used to open your local bank account. If you opened your bank account with a different identity document from the one you submitted as proof of identity, please also submit the identity document you used to open the bank account.
