a tag with the XRP logo on it

XRP tags are a feature of XRP Ledger payments that provides a more lightweight way to map deposits and payments to individual customers. In a nutshell, an XRP tag is a unique code assigned to each Luno Ripple (XRP) wallet.

It’s used to identify the receiver in a Ripple transaction, and it makes sure that the XRP reaches it’s intended destination.

How do XRP tags work?

To send XRP from Luno you have to specify:

  • The recipient’s XRP address and XRP tag, or

  • the recipient’s XRP address without a tag (some addresses outside of Luno have tags with a zero value).

To receive XRP at Luno the sender has to specify:

  • Both your XRP address and your XRP tag.
Why? All receive addresses created on Luno have an address and a tag, to ensure that whoever is sending you XRP (from another exchange for instance) uses both your XRP address and your XRP tag.

Note

Don’t try to send Ripple to your Luno XRP wallet if you can’t specify a tag.

Where do I find my XRP tag?

If you’d like to receive XRP, you’ll need to give your XRP tag to the sender, so that the funds can successfully reach your XRP Wallet.

Here's how

  1. Log in to your Luno account, and from the menu, select Wallets

  2. Select your XRP wallet

  3. From the options at the top, select RECEIVE

  4. If it’s your first time receiving XRP, you’ll navigate to the Create a new Ripple address screen

  5. Give your Ripple address a name (eg. bike payment), and then select CREATE

  6. On the next screen, select NEXT

  7. Enter the amount you’d like to receive, and then either:

    • Take a screenshot of the QR code, or

    • copy both the address and XRP tag displayed to give it to the person that’s sending you Ripple

  8. Once you’ve created your receive address and XRP tag, the next time around, simply select RECEIVE from your XRP wallet main screen - the address and tag will be displayed to you on the modal that slides in from the bottom. Select it to navigate to the Scan to receive screen, where you’ll find your QR code, address and XRP tag

Keep in mind

If you’re sending XRP from your Luno wallet to another person’s Luno wallet, you’ll be prompted to enter a valid destination tag.

If you’re sending XRP to an external wallet, or if you (or anyone else) is sending from an external wallet to your Luno Wallet, Luno has no way of ‘enforcing’ a destination tag.

If no tag is used, it will result in a failed transaction.

Note

On a failed transaction, the sender will pay a transaction fee irrespective of the transaction failure. Failed transactions will be on the blockchain indicated with a “DST tag needed”.

If an incorrect tag is used, the funds won’t be allocated, and you’ll have to get in touch with our support team.

Note

When getting in touch, please include the transaction ID so we can find the funds for you. It can either be a screenshot clearly displaying the transaction ID, or you can just include it in the description.
