Does this apply to me?
Trading wallets are currently only available in Indonesia, but will be rolled out globally in future.
To support our upgraded, ultra-low latency exchange platform, Luno is introducing trading wallets. This article covers everything you need to know about what trading wallets are, why they are being introduced, and how to use them.
Unlike your multi-purpose transactional wallet (used for holding, depositing, and withdrawing funds), a trading wallet is purpose-built exclusively for executing trades on the Luno Exchange.
Key benefits of trading wallets
- Faster performance: Trading wallets run on Luno’s new high-speed ledger technology, reducing order execution latency to under 10ms.
- Segregated funds: You can ringfence funds specifically intended for exchange trading, keeping them distinct from your general holding balance.
- No extra costs: Transferring funds into or out of Trading Wallets is completely free, and trading fees remain exactly the same.
- Foundation for advanced features: This infrastructure upgrade sets the foundation for future advanced products on the exchange, such as spot margin and perpetual futures.

Frequently asked questions
Is funding a trading wallet mandatory?
Yes, for Exchange trading. Once your market (e.g. BTC/ZAR) migrates to the new exchange, exchange orders must be placed using a trading wallet.
What happens if I don't fund a trading wallet before the migration?
Your account, crypto, and fiat remain completely safe. However, you won't be able to place new orders on the exchange until you transfer funds into a trading wallet. The transfer will be seamless and instant
Can I trade on the exchange right now using my trading wallet?
Yes. If you fund your trading wallet today, you can continue to trade on the existing exchange. When your market migrates to the new platform, your trades will automatically benefit from the faster execution speeds with no action required.
Does creating a trading wallet affect my other balances or features?
No. Your combined total account balance will still reflect all of your assets. Staking, Instant Buy/Sell, and blockchain deposits/withdrawals remain unaffected and operate through your transactional wallets as usual.
Can I transfer funds back to my transactional wallet?
Yes, at any time. Moving funds between your transactional wallet and trading wallet is instant and completely free of charge.
I trade using the Luno API. How do I set up and fund a trading wallet?
Our existing endpoints fully support trading wallets and no breaking changes have been introduced. You can manage your migration using these three endpoints:
- /account – Pass the optional type parameter to specify or create a trading wallet.
- /move – Transfer funds of the same currency between your transactional wallet and trading wallet.
- /balances – Response details identify the wallet type to distinguish transactions.
For detailed endpoint documentation, Swagger files, and SDKs, visit the official Luno API website.
Tip
We recommend creating your trading wallet and updating the wallet IDs in your trading software prior to your market's migration date to avoid trading interruptions.
Where do my funds go after an order executes?
The proceeds from the trade will go to a trading wallet rather than a transactional wallet.
If you place an order in a market currency for which you don't yet have a trading wallet (e.g., buying BTC with a USDC trading wallet), Luno will automatically create a trading wallet for the target currency (BTC) upon order execution.
