Luno charges a monthly inactivity fee of $2 (or local currency equivalent) for accounts that haven’t transacted in over a year. This fee applies strictly to your cash/fiat wallet, so we will not debit or deduct funds from your cryptocurrency holdings.
When does the fee kick in?
The fee applies if your account meets both of the following conditions:
- You haven't made a qualifying transaction on Luno for 12 consecutive months or longer.
- Your account holds an active local currency (fiat) cash balance.
If your cash balance is less than $2, we will only deduct the remaining cash amount. Your balance will never go negative, and no further fees will apply once your cash balance reaches zero.
What can I do to avoid the inactivity fee?
You won’t pay an inactivity fee if you take any of the following actions:
- Make a transaction: Sign in to your Luno account and complete a buy, sell, or trade of any asset. You can also stake, or (depending on region) buy a bundle or enter a prediction market.
- Deposit funds: Make a local currency deposit into your wallet.
- Withdraw your cash: Transfer your cash balance straight to your linked bank account.
Taking any of these actions resets your inactivity period for another 12 months.
Why does Luno charge this fee?
There are operational costs involved in maintaining your account and holding funds on your behalf. These costs are usually covered through regular trading and transaction fees. When an account remains dormant while holding cash, this small fee helps cover the administrative overhead.
