How do I check my transaction's status on a blockchain explorer?

If you’ve sent crypto to a wallet address and the recipient has not received it, you can check the status of the transaction on a blockchain explorer to see what’s going on. But, before we dive into it, here’s a short explainer about blockchains and blockchain explorers.

A blockchain is a digital public ledger that keeps track of all cryptocurrency transactions. Each cryptocurrency has its own unique blockchain and all transactions are visible to anyone who chooses to find it on a blockchain explorer.
A blockchain explorer is a free search engine (like Google) that lets you search and view cryptocurrency transactions, including wallet addresses, the times of transactions, transaction amounts, pending transactions, and other on-chain data. However, while anyone can view a wallet address’s transaction info, the wallet owner’s private information remains private.

To track the progress of your transaction, you’ll need to get the transaction ID for your crypto send. Once you've copied your transaction ID, you can search for your transaction on a blockchain explorer.

Here's how to check your transaction's status

On the Luno app

  1. Go to your Portfolio

  2. Open the crypto wallet that you sent from

  3. Select the transaction you want to check, and you should see all the transaction details, including the transaction ID

  4. Copy the transaction ID

Note

A transaction ID (also known as a transaction hash) is the unique address of a transaction in a blockchain that serves as proof that your transaction has taken place, much like a proof of payment statement would.

On the blockchain explorer

  1. Go to the blockchain explorer that you’d like to check the transaction on

  2. Paste the transaction ID or address into the search bar

  3. On the transaction screen, you’ll see whether the transaction was confirmed, unconfirmed or has failed

Tip

You can find the different blockchain explorers for each cryptocurrency in this article.

Keep in mind

  • Crypto platforms generally need a certain number of confirmations on the blockchain to successfully receive a transaction. This article will give you a good idea of what confirmations are, how many Luno needs and why.

  • Depending on the cryptocurrency you’ve sent, the minimum expected receive time to a Luno recipient ranges from five minutes to two hours, while other crypto platforms could be delayed up to one day. However, high network activity can push this out further.

  • When sending or receiving XRP, a valid XRP tag may be required to ensure that the transaction reaches its destination. When checking the status of an XRP transaction on a blockchain explorer, it might appear to have been successful. However, without the address and tag, the funds might not be allocated correctly.
