What is authorisation and how does it work?

As an added security measure, you need to authorise actions on your Luno account that are considered high risk.

These actions include:

How it works

When performing one of the above actions, we’ll send you an authorisation request via SMS, email or push notification (if you have a trusted device). Following the link will take you to an authorisation screen with a summary of the action you’re about to authorise.

  • If the details of the action are correct, select Authorise to complete the action

  • If the details of the action are incorrect or you did not initiate this action, select Deny to cancel it

Tip

If you don’t recognise this activity on your account, lock your account and report it immediately.

Frequently asked questions

When performing an action on your account, you’ll be shown a screen asking you to check your SMS, email or push notification to authorise the action.

You’ll either receive it by SMS, email or push notification.

If you have the Luno app installed on your device and you’ve made it a trusted device, you’ll get authorisation requests via push notification. In all other cases, you will receive authorisation requests via SMS or email.

  1. Sign in to your account

  2. Make the device trusted

If you don’t receive the authorisation request, your next actions will depend on the current screen.

  • Check your SMS

You may have the option to Call me instead, where you can authorise the transaction via phone call

  • Check your email

You may have the option to Call me instead, where you can authorise the transaction via phone call

  • Check your push notifications

You may have the option to Resend via SMS. Please wait a moment before resending the requests via SMS

  • Profile

From the profile screen, you’ll see an Authorisation required notification where you can either cancel the action or choose Call me instead

Tip

For greater reliability, install the mobile app and make it a trusted device to authorise transactions via push notification instead of SMS or email.

  • Web browser

When you sign in to Luno from a new web browser, the web browser is considered to be a new device. You’ll be required to authorise the first send transaction initiated from that new browser

  • Mobile app

When you sign in to Luno from the Luno mobile app, the mobile app is considered to be a new device. You’ll be required to authorise the first send transaction initiated from that mobile app

  • Mobile sign-in

Every time you sign out of the mobile app and then sign back in, the mobile app is considered to be a new device even if you use the same mobile phone

No. As this is a security feature, it cannot be disabled.
